Characterised by sun, surf and sand, Queensland islands are popularly seen as paradises and playgrounds. But due to their geographic isolation, life on the islands can be far from idyllic.

State Library of Queensland’s exhibition Islands will explore the hidden histories of Queensland’s islands and in doing so reshape our knowledge of these close but faraway places. From Peel Island’s lazaret and St Helena Island’s penal settlement to the story of Eliza Fraser and the development of tourism on Lindeman Island, Islands brings to life some of the lesser known stories of the state’s island life. The exhibition invites you to stop a moment and listen closely to just a few of the voices that whisper their stories about life on Queensland’s islands.

Islands draws on State Library’s rich collections to explore the stories of six Queensland islands through photographs, drawings, maps, objects and more.
